The Sacrament of Holy Communion
The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, plus other days such as Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. Our church practices open communion. The communion table is open to all Christians who wish to know the presence of Christ and to share in the community of God’s people.
Children and Communion
Whether children have a full understanding of the meaning of communion is not a requirement for participating in the sacrament. Children have a sense for the sacred time and the importance of taking the elements. The decision as to when a child first takes communion is a family decision. However, we provide basic instruction on communion to second graders. Some of the lessons include the meaning of communion and the symbols that are used. We talk about Jesus’ last supper with the disciples and why we have communion. Learning about communion and the meaning for each of us is a lifelong journey.
